Muslims on Islam

Ex-Jihadist Seeks Islam's Martin Luther - Nolan Finley

Hamid believes a reformation will lead to the more enlightened practice of Islam. The essential ingredients of reform, he says, are rejection of the principles that apostates must be killed, women can be subjugated and enslaved, Jews are subhuman, and Islam can be spread through violence.

Instead of walking on eggshells for fear of roiling the wasps' nest, he says both East and West would be better served by a vigorous critique of Islam.

"I asked a Palestinian I met: 'Let's assume that all the Jews of Israel were to convert to Islam, would you still fight them?' He said, 'no.' In that case, the land is not the problem."

Sounds good. There is no doubt that confronting this is better than backing off. The problem is terrorists have made good on their pledge to bring this to the common citizens of the countries they target. When we really confront the threat of terrorism, instead of seeking out distractions that only enflame the hatred of America, we will be able to make our populace feel secure, and confront terrorism and the terrorist cries for violence, that stir up the problems. Right now we are in a position where we have lost our credibility and tied our hands, and when Israel decides it has to act alone against Iran, we will have helped to create a situation that will put Israel under world anger and discord again. We should have been able to unilaterally lead the charge against Iran and North Korea, and we have rendered ourselves impotent by the poor choices we have made. Now, we have to be dependent on Russia and China seeing the dangers in the world clearly and not through finacial concerns, and we know by now that will only take us so far. Of course, with the threat of an ever escalating nuclear stage, maybe we will be pleasantly surprised by the responsibility shown by these other world leaders. But I would hate to rest our security, or Israel's, on that.
