To end Iran standoff, plan for war Michael Rubin

If a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear problem is to be found, it is time for Washington to plan for war. Diplomats cannot break the current impasse simply by trying more aggressive diplomacy. Tehran will only change course if it believes it faces a credible threat for defying the will of the world.
[W]ar preparation is itself a form of diplomacy.
With the U.S. Army tied down in Iraq, Iranian officials believe the U.S. military is hamstrung. But the U.S. Navy and Air Force are not hamstrung.
Perhaps it is time to stage war games and exercises in the Persian Gulf and on Iran's borders. The Iranian government should know what it is up against. Only the threat of force, and not the threat of UN finger-wagging, can persuade Tehran to stop spinning its centrifuges.

While it is true that it is a form of diplomacy, it is another thing to say it is credible. We did not finish the job in Afgfhanistan. Mission was unaccomplished in Iraq, and is now a mess that keeps us bogged down. North Korea rattles its nuclear sabre as much as Iran, but admittedly iran is more dangerous since it has called for the annihilation of another nation. Nevertheless, to say we can give Iran a credible threat on our own is laughable. Unless we claim we will nuke them, they will not quake in their boots and will be ready for war, whcih they will then use as an excuse to flood the world noncovertly with terrorist arms, while they invade Iraq and engage us on the ground that we clearly would not wish to take on now. We have played our cards for now, and only a clean victory in Afghanistan, and a reasonable way to stabilize Iraq will give us back the credibility we need to frighten Iran with a military option. Or the UN needs to grow "a pair" and show that they really will stand up to a nation attempting to go nuclear while speaking out for the destruction of another nation. The entire world should unite against such a menace, and would help give pause to North Korea, and the next Irans and North Koreas out there.
