Road Map Evaluated

Is the road map still relevant? -Daniel Pipes

[The plan's] most fundamental [fault] was its assumption that if only the Palestinians were given just a tad more of this or that, they would finally recognize the benefits of harmonious co-existence with a Jewish state of Israel. Not to have learned by now that Palestinians have larger and more aggressive ambitions than to live side-by-side with Israel implies living in a state of denial.

[T]here is no need for a new plan. The Bush administration should drop its overly-ambitious notions of "solving the Arab-Israeli conflict."

As Irving Kristol memorably observed, "Whom the gods would destroy, they first tempt to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict."

There are many factions and ideas existing within the Palestinian situation. Judging all of them by actions and statements of the most extreme is like judging the American people's desire to invade and overthrow sovereign nations by the actions of one president who wrested the right to wage war through deceit and fear mongering. In both cases, both societies are probably better than the worst things their leaders have done.

But terrorism enjoys wide support within Palestinian society.

There is a stunning absence of peace advocacy groups there as well. If Fatah is the best Palestinian society can come up with, we may be in for quite a ride...
