Window of opportunity?

Is there a window of opportunity for Israel-Palestinian peace right now?

True, Abbas is less extreme than Arafat, but he is far weaker. He himself has reportedly admitted that his regime cannot stop terrorist attacks on Israel from the territory it supposedly controls. Fatah is so fossilized, factionalized and corrupt that it is incapable of changing course. Nor does most of the leadership want it to. They would prefer to steal aid money rather than use it effectively. And they don't want to be considered traitors to the cause by pursuing moderation.

Thus, there is no chance of their agreeing to a peace accord ending the conflict.
Politicians should not making fools of themselves by racing around to create peace blueprints, conferences and financial give-aways which will fail in a humiliating manner...

All probably true, but you have to play with the cards you are dealt. The world will not sit idly by, nor should it, while we wait for Abbas to fall to Hamas completely.

But not all cards have to be consessions to questionable characters pretended to be questionable characters.

Why, for instance, should Israel provide electricity to Gaza? And why isn't Israel using that card. Until all missles stop flying from Gaza, i'd give them a semi-permanent blackout.

All aid to Abbas should be conditional...why all the unconditional love?

Showing children, elderly and the sick without power on the internet and news will not help Israel in any quarter of the world. And what makes you think it would work on people who strap bombs on their kids chests and send them off to die? I am sure sitting in the dark would be an acceptable path to martyrdom.

Actually, yes...i believe that shutting down the power grid in Gaza can bring Gilad Shalit home [you want electricity; we want Shalit] and place intense pressure on the Hamas thugocracy.

They're tossing bombs into Sderot every day and we're pumping electricity...something's wrong with that picture...

I hear you. But I don't know. A war didn't get a release. My fear is that kind of pressure on these kinds of people will mean death to the hostage, figuring that this too would end the siege.
